As a little girl, Sue Padgett went to the Y in Elkin, where she grew up. “The Y was where the whole community came together,” she recalls. Sue participated in all the programs available to her at the Y. “I swam, was in Leaders Club, took gymnastics and even synchronized swimming,” she says. She later worked for the Y as a swim instructor and lifeguard.

Larry Mull first attended YMCA Camp Hanes as a camper. “It was a boost to my self-confidence and there was a strong feeling of belonging. Those summers as a camper really helped shape the person I am today,” Larry says.

Patti Davis walks the halls of the William G. White, Jr. Family YMCA with the energetic enthusiasm you’d expect from a “self-proclaimed exercise junkie.” Davis is an aerobics instructor with a passion that reaches deeper than the physical benefits of exercise. She is often seen slowing her lively pace to stop and speak with seniors, who she recognizes may need a friendly conversation.

When you think of the Heritage Club, typically young professionals are not the first members that come to mind. For Judy Sweger, the decision to become part of the Heritage Club was part of an overall plan for unforeseen circumstances.

David Fain is a third generation Y supporter. His grandfather was a member and his father was a past Board Chair. So it is no surprise that David began coming to the Y as a child, attending after-school programs and swimming at the Spruce Street YMCA. He also had his first overnight camping experiences at YMCA Camp Hanes.
