WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In conjunction with the City of Winston-Salem and the Mayor's Office, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina celebrates the addition of a historic marker for the Patterson Avenue Family YMCA in downtown Winston-Salem.

Originally envisioned in 1919 by local Black leaders and YMCA officials, the Patterson Avenue YMCA was formally established in 1924 to serve young Black men during a time of segregation. From its earliest days, the branch provided a safe, supportive space for education, recreation, and personal growth.

“The Patterson Avenue YMCA historical marker stands as a lasting tribute to a legacy of resilience, community, and opportunity, honoring the rich history that now lives on through the YMCA REACH Center at Winston Lake,” said YMCA REACH Center Executive Director Rev. Kenneth Pettigrew.

By the 1930s and 1940s, the YMCA had become a vibrant community hub—home to youth programs, athletic leagues, and civic groups that helped shape generations of leaders. In 1953, a new YMCA-YWCA facility opened on Patterson Avenue, expanding access to programs and resources that strengthened the community for decades.

The branch relocated in 1985 and continued its legacy as the Winston Lake Family YMCA. After a complete remodel in 2024 and 2025, it is now the YMCA REACH Center at Winston Lake, continuing to serve the community in all aspects of spirit, mind, and body.

While the original site no longer remains, the new historical marker ensures that the story of the Patterson Avenue YMCA—and the people it served—will not be forgotten. The marker also recognizes the site’s connection to the former Depot Street Graded School, adding important context to the history of Black education and community life in Winston-Salem.

Guided by the principle of Sankofa—looking back to move forward—this effort reflects the YMCA’s ongoing commitment to honoring its history while building a more inclusive future for all.
