YMCA Literacy Program Awarded $10,000 in Grant Funds
The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina and its Literacy Initiative has been awarded $10,000 from the Dollar General Adult Literacy Fund.
In 2024, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina’s Adult Literacy Program served 340 people, with rising demand. It offers three services: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), enhancing communication, technology, and career skills; Refugee & Immigrant Society of Entrepreneurs (RISE), fostering entrepreneurship and English development for refugees and immigrants; and reading classes, pairing participants with tutors to improve literacy skills.
In 2026, the YMCA’s literacy program served over 300 people and had a measurable skill gain rate of almost 52%, which is well above the state’s target rate of 44%. Measurable skill gains are performance indicators intended to show a participants’ progress toward achieving employment in a livable-wage job, on a career pathway, or earning a credential, such as an HSE diploma or industry-recognized training certificate.
The skill gains made in the YMCA Literacy program empower adult learners. Through a mix of one-on-one tutoring and group classes, the program offers ESOL and reading sessions at YMCA branches and the Sherwood Forest UMC Learning Center.
These in-person sessions build relationships, identify student strengths, and target areas for growth. Tutors and students meet for at least three hours weekly, while workshops and short courses led by YMCA staff and volunteers focus on practical career skills, including resume writing, computer use, online job searches, mock interviews, and conversational English. Designed for learners with limited literacy, these workshops run year-round with rolling enrollment.
This funding will allow the Literacy Initiative to expand and strengthen their digital literacy programming by creating a dedicated learning lab and hiring a specialized instructor to lead hands-on computer skills training. Funding will also support the purchase of instructional resources, such as workbooks and teachers' manuals, to enhance lesson quality for both students and instructors.
Grant support will also help expand the Literacy Initiative’s general reading program through the introduction of adult reading circles. These small groups of 4–6 participants, guided by trained facilitators, will provide a supportive and engaging environment for adults working to improve their literacy skills and build confidence in reading. By fostering connection, encouragement, and a love for learning, the reading circles will empower participants to achieve personal growth while strengthening literacy and community engagement.
About Literacy at the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina
In 2025, the Y proudly celebrated 35 years of empowering adults and strengthening the community through education and opportunity.
The YMCA Literacy Initiative serves nearly 300 adult learners each year through these core programs: Adult Reading and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) along with Financial Literacy and Citizenship Preparation classes.
Dedicated volunteer tutors and instructors provide individualized instruction designed to meet each learner where they are, helping them achieve their personal, professional, and family goals. To support parents, Kids Zone is available, which allows them to focus on learning while their children are cared for in a safe, engaging environment.
More than 20% of North Carolinians read below a fifth-grade level or struggle to speak English well enough to support their families or secure meaningful employment. The YMCA Literacy Initiative exists to change that.
Through free, accessible, and community-based programs, the Y helps adults build literacy, language, and life skills that open doors; improving communication, confidence, and opportunities for success at home, at work, and in the community.
