The Y is proud to offer a variety of Active Older Adults programs committed to helping seniors maintain a healthy lifestyle and strengthen social ties. Participants in the program enjoy group outings, health education seminars, group fitness classes, volunteer opportunities and events designed to promote mental agility, good health and independence. Basic daily exercise provides many health benefits and may decrease illness, chronic disease, fatigue and the risk of falling.

Lunch is on us for November
November is Diabetes Prevention Month, our guest speaker will answer questions about diabetes and prediabetes. ONE out of TWO seniors is at risk! In advance of the upcoming holidays, we will meet on MONDAY, and better yet, WE WILL FIX LUNCH FOR EVERYONE! For this month’s luncheon, we will meet in Gym #2. Feel free to bring a dessert to share. Also, please feel free to bring a friend, they need not be a YMCA member.
Our speaker / topic this month: Diabetes and Prediabetes. Type 2 diabetes affects not just the person, but entire families as well. The good news is that it is possible to reverse course—simple lifestyle changes reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Your Y can help people make the necessary changes to improve health.

Community Flu Shots to Protect Us All
CVS will be offering flu shots to members, family, and guests in the lobby on Friday, November 16 from 11:00am-1:00pm. Please sign up for a time slot in the AOA book in the lobby – the whole process should take less than 15 minutes, and there’s no doctor’s office visit. If your preferred time slot is taken, walk-ins will be accommodated while supplies last. Most major insurance plans are accepted – please remember your insurance cards. The cost without insurance is $30.
Learn to Play Card Games
Join us for fun and fellowship in the lobby as we learn how to play popular card games such as Rummy and Skip-bo. No experience is needed. YMCA member Jane Quinn will be sharing information about rules and tactics for these and other games. Light refreshments will be provided. Please remember to sign up at the events table.
Walking With Purpose
Join other YMCA members and guests for a fun walking challenge. Each month we will set a new goal for miles walked. Everyone who meets the goal will be entered into a drawing for a great YMCA prize. Our June goal is to walk 79 miles- the distance to the Billy Graham Library!
You can walk on your own or meet up with others to walk as a group. Pick up a log sheet today and start walking toward this month’s goal!
SilverSneakers® is a preventative exercise program that enhances the quality of life for older adults across the country. Retirees and those eligible for Medicare can check with their Health Care provider to see if they qualify for SilverSneakers®, which gives participant a free membership to the Y. Through the program, members gain access to customized SilverSneakers® classes that improve strength, flexibility, balance and endurance. This program combines health, wellness and fitness so seniors feel empowered and build friendships.
Now Offering Silver&Fit® Memberships
Branches of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina will now offer Silver&Fit® memberships, available with participating insurance plans.
Health plans offer the Silver&Fit® Exercise and Healthy Aging Program to eligible Medicare Advantage/Supplement beneficiaries and group retirees. The program aims to improve quality of life. As a Silver&Fit member, you’ll get to work out more, meet new friends, and be more social. The Silver&Fit program is a product of American Specialty Health Fitness, Inc., a subsidiary of American Specialty Health Incorporated (ASH).
The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina also offers SilverSneakers® memberships, available with participating health plans.
