Swim Lessons

Our swim lesson format is designed to make students of all levels feel welcome, foster a sense of achievement, emphasize group activities, and enforce a skill continuum that allows students to advance more easily and quicker from level to level.

Parent/Child Swim Lessons ages 6 months-36 months

Water adjustment and water acclimation, entering and exiting water with and with out parent’s help, Shipping and expelling water on cue, breath control and submerging, Learning balance and proper body positions, Buoyancy and back floating, Towing on front and back, Kicking and moving arms on command and moves towards a wanted object such as toy, and side of pool, Prone launch and prone gliding, Safety Tips and handouts for Parents.

Preschool Skills ages 3-5

1 Water Acclimation: No skills required. Will learn how to… submerge and blow bubbles independently, glide 5 ft to wall with assistance, front float with assistance for 10 seconds, glide 5 ft to wall with assistance, back float with assistance for 10 seconds, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back with assistance.

2 Water Movement: Level 1 skills required. Will learn how to…  submerge and look at object on the bottom of pool, front glide 5 ft, front float 10 seconds, back glide 5 ft, back float 10 second, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back, tread water 10 seconds near wall & exit.

3 Water Stamina: Level 2 skills required. Will learn how to…  submerge and retrieve object in chest-deep water, swim on front 10 yds, swim on back 10 yds, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back, tread water 30 seconds & exit.

Level 4 ages 5 & up register as Youth Stage 4. If not 5 years old, must stay in stage 3 until age 5.

Youth Skills ages 6-12

1 Water Acclimation: No skills required. Will learn how to… submerge and blow bubbles independently, glide 5 ft to wall with assistance, front float with assistance for 10 seconds then recover, glide 5 ft to wall with assistance, back float with assistance for 10 seconds then recover, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back with assistance.

2 Water Movement: Level 1 skills required. Will learn how to…  submerge and look at object on the bottom of pool, front glide 10 ft, front float 20 seconds, back glide 10 ft, back float 20 second, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back, tread water 10 seconds near wall & exit.

3 Water Stamina: Level 2 skills required. Will learn how to…  submerge and retrieve object in chest-deep water, swim on front 15 yds, swim on back 15 yds, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back, tread water 1 minute & exit.

4 Stroke Introduction: Level 3 skills required. Will learn how to…  front crawl w/ rhythmic breathing 15 yds, breastroke kick 15 yds, butterfly kick 15 yds, back crawl 15 yds, sitting dive, elementary backstroke (resting stroke) 15 yds, tread water 1 min.

5 Stroke Development: Level 4 skills required. Will learn how to… front crawl w/ bent-arm recovery 25 yds, breastroke 25 yds, butterfly w/ simultaneous arm action & kick for 15 yds, back crawl pull for 25 yds, kneeling dive, sidestroke (resting stroke) 25 yds, tread water 2 min.

6 Stroke Mechanics: Level 5 skills required. Will learn how to… front crawl with flip turn 50 yds, breastroke with open turn 50 yds, butterfly 25 yds, back crawl with pull and flip turns 50 yds, standing (racing) dive, elementary backstroke or side stroke (resting strokes) 50 yds, retrieve object off bottom then tread water for 1 min. Strongly recommend TYDE at this level. Limited class availability.


Lifeguard Certification Classes

During this class, participants will learn life-saving rescue skills for an Aquatic Environment. Once a participant takes the classes and passes the skills and written test, they will be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard for 2 years.

Swim Testing

All children who are middle school age and under must be swim tested (8th Grade and under).

Mark

All children who are middle school age and under are required to wear a neck band or wristband identifying their skill level while in the pool. PFD’s can be worn by all red level swimmers and must be worn by all red level swimmers in group swim time. Neckbands must returned to the lifeguard at the end of swimming time.

Protect

All children middle school age and under must remain in the designated area of the pool indicated by their colored band and a companied by a parent/guardian where necessary.


Swim Testing Levels

Green Level Swimmers

Must complete a deep end swim test consisting of swimming 15 feet without flotation, treading water for 30 seconds, and swimming back from where they started completely unassisted and to the satisfaction of the Lifeguard administering the test. Green level swimmers will be allowed access to the entire pool area. Green level swimmers who are under middle school age (K-5th grade) must have a parent on the pool deck at ALL times.

Yellow Level Swimmers

Must complete a shallow water swim test consisting of swimming the length of the shallow end unassisted without touching the bottom or grabbing onto the wall or lane line. Yellow level swimmers will be allowed access to the shallow end only without the need of a flotation device. Parent/guardian 18 years of age or older must stay on the pool deck at all times while yellow swimmer is in the pool.

Red Level Swimmers

Must be accompanied by an adult 18 years of age or older. Parent/guardian must remain in the pool within arm’s reach of red level swimmer at all times. Parent/guardian cannot be responsible for more than two red level swimmers at one time. Red level swimmers must remain in the 3 feet area of the shallow end indicated by a safety line.  Personal floatation devices are available for use.

All groups using the pool must be tested and placed in the proper area of the pool indicated by colored neck band. All red level swimmers in the group must wear a personal floatation device at all time regardless of height while in the pool.

The Winston Lake Family YMCA offers a variety of Water Aerobics Classes in order to meet the needs of many levels of fitness. Classes are free to members.

TYDE Swim Team

TYDE is a USA Swimming and YMCA swim team offering a full range of competitive programming for all ages (kindergarten-adult). Originally started in 1973 as WSY, we have grown to become one of the largest and most respected swim teams in North Carolina and across the country.
