The pool area will close on September 8 while we install new pool liners in the sunshine pool and lap pool, and redo tilework in the hot tub. The area will remain closed until September 24. We will have Open Swim and Water Aerobics offerings at the Express Y Rehab pool during that time. You may also use any other YMCA during that time, click here for a list of locations. The schedule will be available by September 3.

Preschool and private lessons often take place in the sunshine pool when it is not in use by water fitness classes. Please be patient as we accommodate these lessons.
Adult only swim time is available throughout the year, but will change seasonally. The adult only swim time during the school year is: Monday–Friday from 2:00-3:30pm. All children should remain in the lap pool during this time.
We want you to have the best summer ever at the Y. Part of that is working to improve your pool experience. Moving forward, the outdoor pool will be limited to YMCA members and their guests, as well as out of town guests. This will help prevent overcrowding and ensure a fun, safe environment. Pool breaks for all pools will happen every hour on the hour for 10 minutes. All swimmers under 18 must take a break.
If thunder is heard or lightning is seen, the lifeguards will close all indoor and outdoor pools and clear the pool decks. All pools must remain closed until 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning is observed, as per insurance and YMCA guidelines.

Parent/Child Swim Lessons ages 6 months-36 months
Water adjustment and water acclimation, entering and exiting water with and with out parent’s help, Shipping and expelling water on cue, breath control and submerging, Learning balance and proper body positions, Buoyancy and back floating, Towing on front and back, Kicking and moving arms on command and moves towards a wanted object such as toy, and side of pool, Prone launch and prone gliding, Safety Tips and handouts for Parents.
Preschool Skills ages 3-5
1 Water Acclimation: No skills required. Will learn how to… submerge and blow bubbles independently, glide 5 ft to wall with assistance, front float with assistance for 10 seconds, glide 5 ft to wall with assistance, back float with assistance for 10 seconds, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back with assistance.
2 Water Movement: Level 1 skills required. Will learn how to… submerge and look at object on the bottom of pool, front glide 5 ft, front float 10 seconds, back glide 5 ft, back float 10 second, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back, tread water 10 seconds near wall & exit.
3 Water Stamina: Level 2 skills required. Will learn how to… submerge and retrieve object in chest-deep water, swim on front 10 yds, swim on back 10 yds, water exit independently, roll back to front & front to back, tread water 30 seconds & exit.
Level 4 ages 5 & up register as Youth Stage 4. If not 5 years old, must stay in stage 3 until age 5.
Youth Skills ages 5-12

5 Stroke Development: Level 4 skills required. Will learn how to… front crawl w/ bent-arm recovery 25 yds, breastroke 25 yds, butterfly w/ simultaneous arm action & kick for 15 yds, back crawl pull for 25 yds, kneeling dive, sidestroke (resting stroke) 25 yds, tread water 2 min.
6 Stroke Mechanics: Level 5 skills required. Will learn how to… front crawl with flip turn 50 yds, breastroke with open turn 50 yds, butterfly 25 yds, back crawl with pull and flip turns 50 yds, standing (racing) dive, elementary backstroke or side stroke (resting strokes) 50 yds, retrieve object off bottom then tread water for 1 min. Strongly recommend TYDE at this level. Limited class availability.

Private lessons provide an opportunity for your instructor to work with you one-on-one based on your individual needs and abilities.
Semi-private lessons are available to swimmers of all ages and swimming abilities in groups of 2-3. These lessons are perfect for siblings, couples, cousins, neighbors and friends who want to learn to swim together in a more individualized setting than traditional lessons offer.
Tyde Swim Team
TYDE is a USA Swimming and YMCA swim team offering a full range of competitive programming for all ages (kindergarten-adult). Originally started in 1973 as WSY, we have grown to become one of the largest and most respected swim teams in North Carolina and across the country. Lifeguard Certification Classes

Early Morning Intermediate
This class offers a moderately intense workout in the warm waters of the Sunshine Pool. This class offers a wide variety of actions focusing on building strength in body and core, endurance, and range of motion.
Build friendships and muscle with this intermediate level workout. This class offers a wide variety of activities from low-impact cardio and strength building work in the shallow end to no-impact workout in the deep end.
Lunch Time Beginner- Intermediate
For those who like to sleep in, we have a traditional class for you!
Lunch Time Intermediate- Advanced
Get a workout doing untraditional workouts! Relays, core focused workouts, water volleyball, kickboxing, and more!
Beginner-Intermediate Deep Water
This class focuses on deep water exercises which build core strength and endurance and range of motion. This class offers all the benefits of strength and fitness training with no impact. Flotation devices are available for use.
Lunch Time Beginner-Intermediate
Come join this active community as they work together to reach their own goals. Each class is centered around specific skills and will take you through a complete workout – including warm-up, aerobic and interval training, and cool down.
Come join this class for an exercise experience which fuses the best of two worlds – low impact, water resistance exercise with high energy muscle-group work.
