Health Camper & Healthy Camp
All procedures we follow to help keep camp healthy are based on guidance from the CDC, American Camp Association, Alliance for Camp Health, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and Stokes County Health Department.
First and Foremost-Prevention
- Before attending camp we ask any staff and campers who are feeling unwell or are experiencing symptoms of an infectious disease to remain home from camp.
- We provide training for staff and campers on hygiene, cough/sneeze etiquette and health and safety procedures. Encouraging washing hands and providing hand sanitization stations outside of our dining hall.
- We encourage all eligible staff and campers to stay up to date with their health care and vaccinations. Provide information to families about health preparation for camp. Require everyone in programs to fill out a health form.
Monitoring Campers and Staff
- Campers, during the first day of camp, will meet nurses for a general wellness screening/lice check.
- Isolate anyone with symptoms or health concerns that are contagious and provide care until pick up. We request pick-up be within 3 hours of notification from Camp Staff. Campers who are brought to the infirmary and found to be sustaining a fever at 100 degrees or above will kept in the infirmary and parents contacted for being taken home.
- Disinfect area after they are taken home according to CDC guidelines.
- Parents will be made aware of any mental health concerns while a camper is at camp and work with staff to set everyone up for success.
Cabins/Rest Areas
- Arrange bunks within cabins for proper physical space while sleeping according to ACA guidelines/good ventilation.
Ensure cabins have cleaning supplies needed.
Cleaning Camp
- Ongoing sanitation and cleaning for high-touch areas.
- Make sure areas are well ventilated.
Bathrooms cleaned throughout the day.
Health Center
- Nurses will be onsite during the week to help monitor campers.
- Families will be informed and updated if there are concerns or health issues. If a camper is unwell they will go to the nurses to check symptoms if needed they will be rechecked in an hour. If the symptoms require there is an separate space available. We will reach out to the family to pick up the camper. Campers are expected to be picked up within 3 hours of being notified by Camp Hanes Staff.
- Follow our doctors orders for treatment and decisions on when to send a camper home.
- Follow NC Department of Health and Human Services guidance on a potential exposure to illness.
