Winston-Salem, NC, July 1, 2016 – The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has received $3,000 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local residents. The Y will use the grant to provide healthier snack options to participants at the YMCA’s program at LaDeara Crest apartments. The grant will allow the YMCA to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables to include in healthy afternoon snacks.
“We are grateful to the Food Lion Charitable Foundation for providing the funding to purchase healthy snack options, specifically fresh fruit and vegetables,” said Curt Hazelbaker, President and Chief Executive Officer for the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. “The Y is helping to develop lifelong healthy habits and cultivating environments that make it easier for kids to make healthier choices.”
The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina is the largest provider of childcare through before and after school programs, summer day camp, and other youth programming in the area. As a nonprofit organization, the Y provides financial assistance to ensure that no one is turned away due to the inability to pay and that all children have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
The YMCA is committed to providing all participants with healthy food options through the Y’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in the ongoing fight against childhood obesity. Those standards include making water the drink of choice, providing more opportunities for physical activity, and serving only healthy snack options.
Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.
