Nearly 14 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer in the United States. The Y is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by this disease. Fortunately, people today are living longer, with a cancer diagnosis due to education, early detection, and improved treatment.
LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a 12-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors who are post-treatment up to five years. This program fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life, or their “new normal.”
The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to help emphasize that LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is about health, not disease. In addition to the physical benefits, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people affected by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. The weekly 90-minute sessions take place in a small group setting and are adjusted to the individual’s ability level.
The program is of no cost to participants and also includes a free Y membership for the session’s duration. Our community partners include Forsyth Medical Center, Wake Forest Baptist Medical, Iredell Health System, Wilkes Regional Medical Center, Piedmont Hematology and Oncology, and Cancer Services.
Making an Impact
“I sincerely appreciate the Y taking steps to provide a LIVESTRONG® program to cancer survivors. I came away from the meeting very impressed with the questions asked, as well as that you also invited healthcare professionals for their input. It showed that the Y is genuinely looking out for the needs and well-being of cancer survivors. Thank you and God bless.”
