Pool Hours

Mon-Thurs: 5:00am – 9:30pm
Friday: 5:00am – 8:30pm
Saturday: 7:00am – 6:30pm
Sunday: 12:00pm – 6:30pm

The best times to swim are before 3:45 p.m. or after 5:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. The busiest timeslot in the pool is Monday through Friday, 3:45-5:45 p.m. because only 1 lap lane is available.

Space is limited in the shallow area due to programs in progress Monday through Thursday.

Class Fees for 8 Lessons:
Y Members: $40.00/Potential Members: $86.00
Prices will be prorated for the Monday/Wednesday classes in Session 1, reflecting a 7 class schedule (due to the Holiday).
Please note Saturday Sessions have moved to an 8 week cycle, with one class per Saturday.

Swim Lessons – Class Descriptions

Parent/Child lessons (ages 6-23 months)
This program provides an early water experience for children from six months to three years. Children progress from water adjustment activities through basic water skills. Program instruction is directed toward helping parents work with their children. One adult must accompany each child. Classes are 30 minutes.

Perch + Pike lessons (ages 2-3 years)
This 30 minute class is for children who aren’t ready to be away from an adult for lessons. This transitional class introduces skills to the child and adult together. Children learn to gradually participate on their own.

Preschool lessons (ages 3-5 years)
This class introduces children to their first experience swimming without a parent. It is a great way for kids to learn how to be independent and have fun in the pool. A trained swim instructor teaches this class using the YMCA core values. Children learn at their own pace moving through our four skill levels. Preschool swim levels are Pike, Eel, Ray, and Starfish. Classes are 30 minutes.

Youth lessons (ages 6-15 years)
This class consists of four levels, which focus on stroke development, water safety, personal growth, and fun. A trained swim instructor works with children at their own pace using the YMCA core values, building self-esteem as well as self confidence through swimming. Youth swim levels are Polliwog, Guppy, Minnow, Fish and Flying Fish. Classes are 45 minutes.

Adult lesson (ages 13-up)
This class is for any adult from beginner through advanced. A trained swim instructor works with you moving at your own pace, learning basic stroke development, and water safety. Classes are 45 minutes.

On-Demand Private and Semi Private Lessons
Adults and children can register for individual lessons or take lessons with a friend! On-Demand private and semi-private lessons are 30 minutes. We have several instructors and time slots available. Lifeguard Certification Classes

During this class, participants will learn life-saving rescue skills for an Aquatic Environment. Once a participant takes the classes and passes the skills and written test, they will be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard for 2 years.

Lifeguard Course Prerequisites:

  • Current CPR
  • Current First Aid/AED
  • Current Oxygen Administration
  • Complete medical clearance (recommended)
  • Minimum age 16. If under the age of 18, participant must have parental consent to take this course.
  • Pass the following swimming test:
    • Perform a long, shallow front dive, then swim 500 yards, including 100 yards each of: sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach.
    • Tread water for at least two minutes with legs only
    • Surface dive headfirst and feet first in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet

Must be able to accomplish these tasks:

  • Remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness
  • Sit for extended periods, including in an elevated chair
  • Move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment
  • Observe all areas of the aquatic environment
  • Perform all needed rescues and survival skills
  • Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember
  • Will possess the skills to operate alone as a lifeguard, with or without other lifeguard support.

In most of our branches they each CPR/First Aid & O2 Adm. as part of the course. They have to have these certifications in order to be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard.

OnDemand Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Looking for personal instruction and/or a flexible swim lesson schedule? OnDemand private and semi-private lessons will help! Swimmers learn the basics of swimming in a one-on-one setting or in a small group up to four participants. Lessons are tailored to the skills your child needs to improve his/her swimming. Each class is 30 minutes and sessions are 3, 6 or 9 lessons.

Originally started in 1973 as WSY, we have grown to become one of the largest and most respected swim teams in North Carolina and across the country.
