Lap Pool
Length: 25 yards (36 laps equals a mile)
Depth: 3 1/2 feet – Shallow end; 9 1/2 feet – Deep end
Lap Lanes: 6 (3 are available to lap swimmers and 3 for recreation swimmers)
Temperature: 83 degrees
Other Info: A swim lift is available for those needing assistance in and out of the pool.
Sunshine Pool
Length: 13 yards
Depth: 3 1/2 feet on both ends, 4 1/2 feet in the middle
Temperature: 89 degrees
Other Info: For therapy and exercise use we have a metal bar that extends down two sides of our pool. A swim lift is available for those needing assistance in and out of the pool.

Summer Swim Camps
Keep the kids occupied during summer with Swim Camp
This unique three hour program is designed to give kids the opportunity to spend quality time at the Y and in the pool doing what they love in a safe and fun environment. Kids will be put in groups according to age and skill so they can grow with others on their level. Our instructors are trained to work with beginner swimmers to swim team and will use fun and traditional techniques to build swimmers skills in stroke development, endurance, and strength building in the water. Free swim, games, basic life saving skills are done daily.

2012 Summer Swim Lessons
Swim Lessons at the Wilkes Family YMCA has gotten a makeover with new formatting and more exciting classes! We offer a variety of swimming skills through various traditional and more creative methods. Skills include: endurance, personal safety to give participants the power to understand and respond in an emergency situation, and games that build on strokes and skills. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff are here to take our swimmers from beginner to advanced. Classes run Monday- Thursday for 2 weeks. AM and PM times offered.

H20 Boot Camp Schedule 2012
Spice up your normal work out by taking to the water! This one hour class that runs three days a week for 4 weeks will burn calories, build strength, and increase your endurance. Ab work, pull ups, push ups, lap swimming, mountain climbers, pop ups, treading, weights, partner activities, kick boxing, and more!
For the convenience of your busy schedule we run early morning sessions and evening sessions. For safety reasons you must be able to meet the prerequisites for the class (ability to swim 2 laps with out assistance, tread for 1 minute, and be able to put your face in the water). Ages: 16+

We send a personal e-mail reminding you when a session is beginning and we’ll even e-mail you the registration form. If you take a class we will occasionally take pictures and we e-mail them to you. We will NOT bog your e-mail down with junk mail. Lifeguard Certification Classes
During this class, participants will learn life-saving rescue skills for an Aquatic Environment. Once a participant takes the classes and passes the skills and written test, they will be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard for 2 years.
Lifeguard Course Prerequisites:
- Current CPR
- Current First Aid/AED
- Current Oxygen Administration
- Complete medical clearance (recommended)
- Minimum age 16. If under the age of 18, participant must have parental consent to take this course.
- Pass the following swimming test:
- Perform a long, shallow front dive, then swim 500 yards, including 100 yards each of: sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach.
- Tread water for at least two minutes with legs only
- Surface dive headfirst and feet first in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet
Must be able to accomplish these tasks:
- Remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness
- Sit for extended periods, including in an elevated chair
- Move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair
- Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment
- Observe all areas of the aquatic environment
- Perform all needed rescues and survival skills
- Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember
- Will possess the skills to operate alone as a lifeguard, with or without other lifeguard support.
In most of our branches they each CPR/First Aid & O2 Adm. as part of the course. They have to have these certifications in order to be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard.
Upcoming Classes:
Water Babies
Ages 6 months-2 ½ years old can join this 20-minute class centered around introducing the water to our little future swimmers! Our nurturing instructor acts as a guide as you teach your little one the basic fundamentals of breath control, buoyancy, floating, and more through songs and games. Moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, and uncles are all welcome! Children who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper. We recommend Huggies “Little Swimmers” or Pampers “Splashers.” Those in regular diapers will not be allowed to participate.

Preschool Swim Lessons
Ages: 3 – 5 years
This class introduces children to their first experience swimming without a parent. It is a great way for kids to learn how to be independent and have fun in the pool. A trained swim instructor teaches this class using the YMCA core values. Children learn at their own pace moving through our four skill levels. Preschool swim levels are Pike, Eel, Ray, and Starfish. Classes are 30 minutes.
Youth Swim Lessons
Ages: 6-12 years
This class consists of four levels, which focus on stroke development, water safety, personal growth, and fun. A trained swim instructor works with children at their own pace using the YMCA core values, building self-esteem as well as self confidence through swimming. Youth swim levels are Polliwog, Guppy, Minnow, and Fish. Classes are 45 minutes.
Adult Swim Lessons
Ages: 16 years and older
For the terrific to the absolutely terrified, the YMCA Adult Swim Lesson Program is designed to lay a good foundation for basic aquatic skills and develop strokes and techniques. We will customize your lesson to you!

Water Fitness Class Descriptions
Early Morning Intermediate
This class offers a moderately intense workout in the warm waters of the Sunshine Pool. This class offers a wide variety of actions focusing on building strength in body and core, endurance, and range of motion.
Morning Beginner-Intermediate
Build friendships and muscle with this intermediate level workout. This class offers a wide variety of activities from low-impact cardio and strength building work in the shallow end to no-impact workout in the deep end.
Lunch Time Beginner- Intermediate
For those who like to sleep in, we have a traditional class for you!
Lunch Time Intermediate- Advanced
Get a workout doing untraditional workouts! Relays, core focused workouts, water volleyball, kickboxing, and more!
Beginner-Intermediate Deep Water
This class focuses on deep water exercises which build core strength and endurance and range of motion. This class offers all the benefits of strength and fitness training with no impact. Flotation devices are available for use.
Lunch Time Beginner-Intermediate
Come join this active community as they work together to reach their own goals. Each class is centered around specific skills and will take you through a complete workout – including warm-up, aerobic and interval training, and cool down.
Evening Beginner-Intermediate
Come join this class for an exercise experience which fuses the best of two worlds – low impact, water resistance exercise with high energy muscle-group work.
TYDE Swim Team
Ages: open to all ages who meet the prerequisite
TYDE is a USA Swimming and YMCA swim team offering a full range of competitive programming for all ages. Originally started in 1973 as WSY, we have grown to become one of the largest and most respected swim teams in North Carolina and across the country. Whether you are looking for a gentle introduction to competitive swimming, a nationally ranked training program or anything in between, TYDE has what you’re looking for!

Perch Parent/Child Lessons
Ages: 24-36 months
Advanced Water Babies class. Increases skills through games and activities promoting submerging, stroke development and endurance. Children who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper.
