The Wilkes Family YMCA is constantly growing and expanding the youth and adult sports program. The program hosts a variety of sports for all ages. All youth leagues focus on teaching youth teamwork, friendships, skills and respect for coaches, players and self. If you are interested in a particular sport please note the registration and season dates on our website. You can also call the front desk for further details.

Middle School/Adult Flag Football

For the first time ever we are offering Adult Flag Football at the Wilkes Family YMCA.  You will learn the fundamentals of the game while having fun and making new friends in a positive and encouraging atmosphere. This league is open for guys and girls!

The season will consist of 3 weeks of practice and 8 weeks of games. All practices and games will be held at the Wilkes Family YMCA. Games will begin at 11:30am on Saturdays.

Fee

Registration (July 6-August 16): $45 for Members/$60 for Potential Members

Youth Cheerleading

Cheerleaders for our Flag Football teams

Behind every good football player is a Cheerleader, cheering them on! This is our second year offering Flag Football here at the Wilkes Family YMCA. What does any team need to reach their fullest potential? Support! And who better to support them than cheerleaders? Your child will learn some of the fundamentals as well as several different cheers. All the while having fun and making new friends in a positive and encouraging atmosphere. This is open for boys and girls!

September 14-November 7, 2015

The season will consist of 3 weeks of practice and 6 weeks of games. All practices and games will be held at the Wilkes Family YMCA.

Pickleball Tournament

SHOW YOUR PICKLEBALL POWER!

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, WA. Three dads whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities are credited for inventing the game. Pickleball has evolved from original handmade equipment and simple rules into a popular sport throughout the US and Canada. The game is growing internationally as well.

We have recently added this sport to our programming and hope everyone is enjoying it! We now want to take it to the next bragging rights level! We will be holding this every 2 months. So find a partner and sign up at the Wilkes Family YMCA!

Format for this tournament will be a double elimination with a men’s, women’s, and co-ed divisions. This will be a doubles tournament.

Slam Dunk/Three Point Contest

The Wilkes Family YMCA will be hosting its 1st Annual Dunk Contest and 3 point contest. Bring your inner beast out to participate in the dunk contest! Ladies, you can show up the guys with your long range skills!

Top scores will advance in each round, with a head to head dunk contest for the championship! Same format for the 3 point contest. Winner will get a Slam Dunk/3 point Champion t-shirt and one month free membership for potential members or one free personal training session for members.

Who can participate?

We will have two different age groups with the first being Middle school age up to 14 years old, and secondly, High school and up.

Members may watch the Contest but Potential Members must pay a $2 admission fee. Potential Members not use the Y facilities! The admission cost gains entrance for the Dunk / 3 Point Contest only.

Cheerleading Clinic

Hosted by Coach Melissa Shepherd of the North Wilkes Cheer Team and the Cheer Squad

Coach Shepherd has served as Head Coach of the North Wilkes Middle School Cheer Squad for one year and is currently starting her second year as Head Coach of the North Wilkes High School JV and Varsity Cheer Teams. She holds an AACCA Safety Certification as well as a Heads Up Concussion Certification. Coach Shepherd and the NWHS Cheer Staff along with the NWHS Cheer Teams are very disciplined and have so much admiration for the sport of cheerleading. Coach Shepherd and her staff are very excited to work with young athletes willing to take the initiative to better their skills. The skills we will be working will be cheers, chants, dance, stunting, and tumbling.

You must register at the Wilkes Family YMCA, M-F 5am-9 pm, Saturday 8am-6pm, and Sunday, 1-6pm.

Summer Basketball Clinic

Younger Group is for kids that have 2 years or less experience playing basketball. Players will practice/learn the fundamentals of shooting, ball-handling, passing, and defense while running drills, playing games, and participating in competitions. This is a great opportunity to prepare for upcoming basketball season.

Older Group will focus on the fundamentals of shooting, passing, dribbling, defense, and a team mindset. After this camp, a player will understand the fundamentals but more importantly, how to be the best player as well as teammate, they can be! The first 2 hours will be teaching these skills with the last hour being competitions to utilize their new skills.

We have recently added this sport to our programming and hope everyone is enjoying it! We have made available some times that you may use the Pickleball courts. We currently have two (2) sets here at the Wilkes Family YMCA. The reservation sheet is available at the front desk but please be aware different programming and County school schedules may change the availability so call ahead. Now find a partner and sign up at the Wilkes Family YMCA!

Youth Flag Football

This youth football league will focus on teamwork and sportsmanship while participants learn fundamental football skills, including passing, catching and play execution. YMCA sports emphasize fun, fair play, skill development, teamwork, and self esteem. Cost includes team jersey and trophy.

Adult Pick Up Volleyball

Adult Pick Up Volleyball is all about competition, exercise, relationship building, staying fit, and developing a healthy lifestyle while enjoying a great time! All skill levels are welcome.

Tuesdays from 6:00-8:45pm.

Youth Sports Conditioning and Technique

Youth Conditioning

Ages

7-18 years (both boys and girls)

Designed for youth who are ready and willing to take their sports performance to the next level, this program focuses on building speed, strength, agility, quickness and endurance. These factors allow athletes at every level to improve their performance. Individuals will train with a Certified Personal Trainer. We are certain that your child will not only benefit from this program but enjoy it as well!

Youth Technique

Sharpen your Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, or Tennis technique! Technique training for youth ages 7-18. May be incorporated with Youth Conditioning Class.

Trainer: Dylan Johnson

Dylan played basketball at North Wilkes High School, in college at Warren Wilson College where he won a National Championship, has coached in college, and presently is an Assistant High School coach at Foard High School in Hickory.

He’ll be available on Saturdays and Sundays, all the hours the Y is open!

Individual

4, 1 hour sessions – $108/members, $150/potential members 

8, 1 hour sessions – $200/members, $275/potential members 

Group Sessions 2 or more participants

Our sports leagues are 100% volunteer driven, meaning that every single coach out on the fields is a volunteer.
