Help us build a playground!

We need your help!

It is an exciting time at the Wilkes YMCA. In addition to the groundbreaking for our facility expansion, we are pulling together a team to build a new community playground at the Wilkes Family YMCA. We have been awarded a KaBOOM! playground grant, which provides the materials and we need your help to put it together. Please bring your friends and family for a fun day giving back to the community.

To ensure the success of our project we need a variety of skills, tools and talents on our team. Jobs will include everything from a Team Captain, responsible for the assembly of a piece of equipment with a crew, to mulch spreader and many duties in between.

Please follow these steps to become a team member:

  • Visit our project’s page.
  • Click the Volunteer button.
  • Click RSVP for Build Day. You will be able to volunteer day of the playground build.
  • Include any special skills you have, tools you can bring (sawzall, bolt cutters, electric drill with 5/16 bit, pry bars, socket wrenches, utility knives, hammers, rakes), and time you can be available.
  • We will need people from 8:30am-3:00pm. Any amount of time will help but we know we need strong backs and lots of shovels for mulch between 10am-completion.
  • YOU MAY ALSO RSVP DIRECTLY to Caroline Whitson at c.whitson@ymcanwnc.org or call 336.838.3991

YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program

An estimated one of every three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 7% of those with prediabetes know they have it.

Are you or someone you know at risk? Take the quiz now to find out.

You can reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and gain tools for healthy living. If you are at risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program provides a supportive environment where you can work with others in a small group setting to learn how to adopt healthy habits to reduce your chances of developing the disease.

The program, which is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach in a classroom setting, is delivered over a 12-month period, beginning with 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance. You will learn strategies for eating healthier, increasing your physical activity and making other changes that will improve your overall health and well-being. National Institutes of Health research has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by almost 60%.
