YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program

An estimated one of every three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 7% of those with prediabetes know they have it.

Are you or someone you know at risk? Take the quiz now to find out.

You can reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and gain tools for healthy living. If you are at risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program provides a supportive environment where you can work with others in a small group setting to learn how to adopt healthy habits to reduce your chances of developing the disease.

The program, which is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach in a classroom setting, is delivered over a 12-month period, beginning with 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance. You will learn strategies for eating healthier, increasing your physical activity and making other changes that will improve your overall health and well-being. National Institutes of Health research has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by almost 60%.

Fall Festival

Please join us for a night for families at the YMCA!

The leaves are changing, the air is getting cooler, and it’s time to mark your calendar for the Wilkes Family YMCA Fall Festival!

Friday, October 17
7:00-9:00 pm
Wilkes Family YMCA

Open to the community – you DO NOT have to be a member of the YMCA to attend! Children attend free and adult tickets are just $2. The event is sponsored by the North Wilkesboro Kiwanis Club.

The event will be held at the YMCA, with most activities in the gymnasium.  Carnival-type games will include a Bounce House, Milk Bottle Toss, Double Shot Basketball, Frog Fling, Kick-n-Score, Hi-Striker, a Paperwad War, and many more. There is no cost for the games! Prizes will be given out for each of these games. And, of course, what fall festival would be complete without face-painting and a cake walk?

And once you’ve had more fun than you can stand inside the gym; head outside where we will have two tractors (courtesy of Blue Ridge Tractor) running for our hay rides down the Rivers Edge runway. Wear warm clothes though, it could be a little chilly. If you and the kids find yourselves in the mood for a snack or a drink, don’t worry! We will be selling popcorn, pretzels, animal crackers, cupcakes, fruit snacks and juices, with nothing over a dollar.

If you have any questions about the event, please contact Anita Oliver at 336.838.3991 or a.oliver@ymcanwnc.org
