LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA

The Y and LIVESTRONG® joined together to create LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.

In addition to the physical benefits, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. The 12-week program includes two 90-minute classes per week in a small group setting, which includes a wellness program suited to your individual ability level. The program is no cost to participants and also includes a free Y membership for the session’s duration. Our community partners include Forsyth Medical Center, Wake Forest Baptist Medical, and Cancer Services.

PROGRAM GOALS:

  • Improve energy levels and self esteem
  • Build muscle mass and strength
  • Increase flexibility and endurance
  • Improve ability to perform everyday tasks
  • Develop a fitness plan to continue practicing a healthy lifestyle

PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS:

Our instructors provide a supportive environment for each participant. Each instructor has specialized training in the areas of cancer, post cancer exercise, nutrition, and supportive cancer care.

MAKING AN IMPACT

“I sincerely appreciate the Y taking steps to provide a LIVESTRONG program to cancer survivors. I came away from the meeting very impressed with the questions asked, as well as that you also invited healthcare professionals for their input. It showed that the Y is genuinely looking out for the needs and well-being of cancer survivors. Thank you and God bless.”

Hot Hatha Yoga

Hot Hatha Yoga

Hot Hatha Yoga Studio at the Robinhood Family YMCA
Our new state of the art Hot Yoga Studio provides a place to improve your balance, strength and flexibility. Take your fitness and health to a new level as you strengthen every muscle, tendon, gland and organ in your body. The heated room provides a safe place to enhance flexibility and proper alignment while detoxifying the body through sweating.

What is Hot Hatha Yoga?
This class is a 90-minute challenging sequence of Yoga postures designed to strengthen the spine. The lineage comes from 84 postures in Calcutta, India. Through a series of standing, balancing, floor and breathing exercises, you will safely achieve greater strength, flexibility, overall health and vitality as you breather from one posture to the next. The room is heated in order to help safely align the body, allow for deeper stretch and opening and aid in detoxification. In other words, the heat will enhance your yoga postures. You don’t have to be flexible to do this class. All you need to do is breathe and try the right way.  Be prepared to sweat and try your best. Beginners and advanced yogis will enjoy this class. Avoid eating approximately 2-3 hours prior to class. Bring your  yoga mat, big towel, water, positive attitude, and a smile!
