All potential members/guests must pay the appropriate daily fee. Under 2 years old is free. Youth is considered 2-11 years of age. Household is considered 2 adults and all dependents (under the age of 23) living in the same household. All guests 16 and older must provide a picture ID for every visit. Day pass includes availability to the whole facility (exception is free child care). Member guests (coming in with a member) may enter with a member and pay the appropriate fee to use the pools during the member-only time. A resident is someone that pays Town of Kernersville taxes.



Aqua Boot Camp

Join us for a free Boot Camp in the pool!

This class will involve exercises in the water and on land such as swimming laps, treading water, push ups, squats, ab workouts, exercises using medicine balls and much more!


Runs every Monday and Wednesday 7:00-7:45pm. This will be ongoing and best of all, it’s FREE!


Anyone who enjoys the pool and is looking for a high intensity water workout. Goggles are recommended.

Lifeguard Certification Classes

During this class, participants will learn life-saving rescue skills for an Aquatic Environment. Once a participant takes the classes and passes the skills and written test, they will be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard for 2 years.

Lifeguard Course Prerequisites:

  • Complete medical clearance (recommended)
  • Minimum age 16. If under the age of 18, participant must have parental consent to take this course.
  • Pass the following swimming test:
    • Tread water for two minutes without using arms then swim a 100 front crawl
    • Swim a 50 each of front crawl with head up, sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke with head up, breaststroke kick on back
    • Feet first surface dive to bottom, swim 15 feet, then surface
    • Sprint approximately 20 meters, arm first surface dive to retrieve an object, then tread water for 1 minute without using hands
    • Replace object on bottom, climb out of pool and perform 100 CPR compressions.

Must be able to accomplish these tasks:

  • Remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness
  • Sit for extended periods, including in an elevated chair
  • Move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment
  • Observe all areas of the aquatic environment
  • Perform all needed rescues and survival skills
  • Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember
  • Will possess the skills to operate alone as a lifeguard, with or without other lifeguard support.

Swim Lessons – Class Descriptions

Preschool Swim Lessons ages 3-5

Thirty minute classes. Swim diapers required for those who are not Potty-trained.

Pike: No skills required. Water readiness.
In class: will learn to blow bubbles put, face in water and proper kicking, paddling, and front and back floats with use of flotation devices and water safety.

Eel: Skills required: Put face in water,  float on back and front w/ assistance, jump in swim 5 feet without flotation.
In class: Will learn to bob, kick on back, front and back float, swim without assistance 15 feet, water games and synchronized swimming skills and water safety.

Ray: Skills required: Swim without flotation device 15 feet (half way across pool), float on front and back, and jump into water without help.
In class: Will learn front crawl, elementary backstroke, treading water, synchronized swimming skills, and water safety and game activities.

Starfish: Skills required: Tread water, swim 25 feet using a modified crawl stroke and swim on back.
In class: Will learn survival float, kneeling and sitting dives, boating safety, to coordinate front crawl with rotary breathing and back crawl 25 yards.

Youth Swim Lessons ages 6-12

Classes are 45 minutes.

Polliwog: No skills required. In class: Will be introduced to the front crawl, front and back floats, putting face in water and personal safety skills.

Guppy: Skills required: Blow bubbles, put face in water, float on front and back, and swim 15 feet without assistance.
In class: Will learn to tread water, rudimentary 25 yards front and back crawl, rotary breathing, jump into deep end, and kneeling dive.

Minnow: Skill required: Rudimentary 25 yd. front and back crawl, rotary breathing, jump in deep end, and tread water for 30 seconds.
In class: Will build endurance swimming; reinforce fundamentals of front crawl, elementary backstroke, and diving. Introduction to breaststroke. Emphasize rescue and safety skills.

Fish/Flying Fish/Shark: Skills required: Swim two lengths of both front crawl and back stroke in good form. Can dive in water.
In class: Will learn to perform 50 yards of each: breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly and open turns.

Home School Swim

Swim Lessons are a great component to Youth Development and help teach a necessary life skill. We teach all swimming levels from Beginners to Advanced! Our lessons emphasize aquatic safety, stroke development, and water skills and competencies. – Ages 4+

Home School P.E. Swim

This class is designed for school-age children looking for a swimming component to add to their PE program. An instructor will supervise, interact, and play aquatic games with participants. It’s fun physical fitness in the water! – Ages 6+

Private Swim Lessons

At the Kernersville Family YMCA, we strive to support our community by teaching and developing life-long skills such as learning how to swim and staying safe around aquatic environments. Whether you are looking to help your child pass the swim test, train for a triathlon, or have someone who just needs some extra 1-on-1 instruction in the water, we have coaches and instructors to fit your needs. Lessons can be scheduled at your convenience; Private Swim Lessons are about YOU!

Water Fitness

The Kernersville Family YMCA offers a variety of Water Aerobics Classes in order to meet the needs of many levels of fitness. Classes are free to members.

Water Fitness Class Descriptions

All classes are 45 minutes in length

Adaptable: Range of motion exercise for those that have had surgery, have fibromyalgia, bursitis and/or arthritis. Meets: M/W/F

Aqua Boot Camp: An intense workout combining exercises on the land and in the water for an exhilarating, pulse racing challenge. Community Pool. Meets: M/W

Aqua Fit I & II: Combines cardiovascular workout and major muscle toning in water. Varieties include kickboxing, water walking and whole body toning. Meets: M/W/Sat

Aqua Zumba: This is a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief. Program Pool. Meets: Tues/Sat

Deep Water: Work out in the deep water using a water walking belt. This class is a great aerobic exercise. Meets: T/Th

Deeply Devoted: Work out in the deep water using a water walking belt. This class is great aerobic exercise and will help with core, shoulder and arm strength. Meets: M/T/W/Th/F

Gentle Waves: Exercise in shallow water at your comfort level. Meets: M/W/F

Liquid Energy: A highly energized workout in the shallow end. Meets: T/Th

One on One: Designed for the participant who wants to exercise in the water and has had recent surgery, hip replacement or arthritis. Medical clearance, in written form, is required before you begin. Shallow H2O: Exercise in shallow water at a higher intensity. Meets: M/W/F

Wake Up Call: Start your day right with this moderate to intense deep water workout. We will start those calories burning and get those sleepy muscles moving. Great for early birds. Meets: T/Th beginning Tuesday, September 3

Water Walking: A low impact walking class, with gentle exercises for arms and legs, designed to increase mobility and flexibility in very stiff and weak muscles and joints. Meets: M/W/F

Wild Card: Using moves ranging from marching to kickboxing, you will get great cardio workout that changes EVERY class! Meets: M/W/F

TYDE is a USA Swimming and YMCA swim team offering a full range of competitive programming for all ages. Originally started in 1973 as WSY, we have grown to become one of the largest and most respected swim teams in North Carolina and across the country. Whether you are looking for a gentle introduction to competitive swimming, a nationally ranked training program or anything in between, TYDE has what you’re looking for!

YMCA Splash

Our Splash program is a YMCA program that teaches

  • Pool Safety
  • Backyard Pool Safety
  • Beach Safety
  • Boat Safety
  • Water Park Safety

Each Safety day includes a video module with workbook and a swim module.  Children learn safety as well as basic swim skills. Splash is included in our monthly swim lessons as well as offered as a Summer Camp.
