Youth Swim Lessons

Ages: 6-15 years

This class consists of four levels, which focus on stroke development, water safety, personal growth, and fun. A trained swim instructor works with children at their own pace using the YMCA core values, building self-esteem as well as self confidence through swimming. Youth swim levels are Polliwog, Guppy, Minnow, Fish and Flying Fish. Classes are 45 minutes.

Homeschool Swim

January-May, 2012

Tuesday 11:15 am-12 noon

Thursdays 2:15 pm-3:00 pm

Costs: $15 per session for 1 class a week x 4 weeks
$30 per session for 2 classes a week x 4 weeks

January 3-26; February: January 31-February 23 ; March: February 28-March 22; April 3-26; May 1-24

All levels will be taught from beginners to Advanced Prep.

Lifeguard Certification Classes

During this class, participants will learn life-saving rescue skills for an Aquatic Environment. Once a participant takes the classes and passes the skills and written test, they will be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard for 2 years.

Lifeguard Course Prerequisites:

  • Current CPR
  • Current First Aid/AED
  • Current Oxygen Administration
  • Complete medical clearance (recommended)
  • Minimum age 16. If under the age of 18, participant must have parental consent to take this course.
  • Pass the following swimming test:
    • Perform a long, shallow front dive, then swim 500 yards, including 100 yards each of: sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach.
    • Tread water for at least two minutes with legs only
    • Surface dive headfirst and feet first in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet

Must be able to accomplish these tasks:

  • Remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness
  • Sit for extended periods, including in an elevated chair
  • Move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment
  • Observe all areas of the aquatic environment
  • Perform all needed rescues and survival skills
  • Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember
  • Will possess the skills to operate alone as a lifeguard, with or without other lifeguard support.

In most of our branches they each CPR/First Aid & O2 Adm. as part of the course. They have to have these certifications in order to be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard.

YMCA Splash

Our Splash program is a YMCA program that teaches

  • Pool Safety
  • Backyard Pool Safety
  • Beach Safety
  • Boat Safety
  • Water Park Safety

Each Safety day includes a video module with workbook and a swim module.  Children learn safety as well as basic swim skills. Splash is included in our monthly swim lessons as well as offered as a Summer Camp.


OnDemand Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Looking for personal instruction and/or a flexible swim lesson schedule? OnDemand private and semi-private lessons will help! Swimmers learn the basics of swimming in a one-on-one setting or in a small group up to four participants. Lessons are tailored to the skills your child needs to improve his/her swimming. Each class is 30 minutes.

Home School Swim Lessons/Advanced Swim

The Kernersville Family YMCA offers Home School Swim lessons at all levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced).

Preschool Swim Lessons

Preschool Swim Lessons

Ages: 2-5 years

This class introduces children to their first experience swimming without a parent. It is a great way for kids to learn how to be independent and have fun in the pool. A trained swim instructor teaches this class using the YMCA core values. Children learn at their own pace moving through our four skill levels. Preschool swim levels are Pike, Eel, Ray, and Starfish. Classes are 30 minutes.

Parent/Child Lessons

Ages: 6-36 months

This program provides an early water experience for children from six months to three years. Children progress from water adjustment activities through basic water skills. Program instruction is directed toward helping parents work with their children. One adult must accompany each child. Classes are 30 minutes.

Water Fitness

The Kernersville Family YMCA offers a variety of Water Aerobics Classes in order to meet the needs of many levels of fitness. Classes are free to members.

Water Fitness Class Description

Adaptable H2O Fitness: Range of motion exercise for those that have had surgery, have fibromyalgia, bursitis and/or arthritis. Meets: M/W/F for 45 min

Aqua Fit I & II: Combines cardiovascular workout and major muscle toning in water. Varieties include kickboxing, water walking and whole body toning. Meets: M/W/Sat for 45 min

Deep H2O Fitness: Work out in the deep water using a water walking belt. This class is a great aerobic exercise. Meets: M/T/W/Th/F for 45 min

One on One: Designed for the participant who wants to exercise in the water and has had recent surgery, hip replacement or arthritis. Medical clearance, in written form, is required before you begin. This instruction is offered for an additional fee. Please contact Chris Brady (ext. 108) or Amelia Templeton (ext. 122) at 996- 2231 to get started.

Shallow H2O: Exercise in shallow water at a higher intensity. Meets: M/W/F for 45 min

Sr. Adv. H2O: Exercise in the shallow and/or deep water at a higher intensity/level than Sr. H2O fitness. Meets: M/W/F for 45 min

Sr. Shallow H2O: Exercise in shallow water at the intensity choice of the participant. Meets: M/W/F for 45 min

Water Walking: A low impact walking class, with gentle exercises for arms and legs, designed to increase mobility and flexibility in very stiff and weak muscles and joints. Meets: M/W/F for 45 min
