Additional information

Parents of children under 12 years old must remain within the facility during swim lessons
Advanced class participants need to be able to swim 100 yards without stopping

Swim Lessons – Class Descriptions

Preschool Swim Lessons ages 3-5

Thirty minute classes. Swim diapers required for those who are not Potty-trained.

Pike: No skills required. Water readiness.
In class: will learn to blow bubbles put, face in water and proper kicking, paddling, and front and back floats with use of flotation devices and water safety.

Eel: Skills required: Put face in water, float on back and front w/ assistance, jump in swim 5 feet without flotation.
In class: Will learn to bob, kick on back, front and back float, swim without assistance 15 feet, water games and synchronized swimming skills and water safety.

Ray: Skills required: Swim without flotation device 15 feet (half way across pool), float on front and back, and jump into water without help.
In class: Will learn front crawl, elementary backstroke, treading water, synchronized swimming skills, and water safety and game activities.

Starfish: Skills required: Tread water, swim 25 feet using a modified crawl stroke and swim on back.
In class: Will learn survival float, kneeling and sitting dives, boating safety, to coordinate front crawl with rotary breathing and back crawl 25 yards.

Youth Swim Lessons ages 6-12

Classes are 45 minutes.

Polliwog: No skills required. In class: Will be introduced to the front crawl, front and back floats, putting face in water and personal safety skills.

Guppy: Skills required: Blow bubbles, put face in water, float on front and back, and swim 15 feet without assistance.
In class: Will learn to tread water, rudimentary 25 yards front and back crawl, rotary breathing, jump into deep end, and kneeling dive.

Minnow: Skill required: Rudimentary 25 yd. front and back crawl, rotary breathing, jump in deep end, and tread water for 30 seconds.
In class: Will build endurance swimming; reinforce fundamentals of front crawl, elementary backstroke, and diving. Introduction to breaststroke. Emphasize rescue and safety skills.

Fish/Flying Fish/Shark: Skills required: Swim two lengths of both front crawl and back stroke in good form. Can dive in water.
In class: Will learn to perform 50 yards of each: breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly and open turns.

Lifeguard Certification Classes

During this class, participants will learn life-saving rescue skills for an Aquatic Environment. Once a participant takes the classes and passes the skills and written test, they will be certified as a YMCA Lifeguard for 2 years.

Lifeguard Course Prerequisites:

  • Current CPR
  • Current First Aid/AED
  • Current Oxygen Administration
  • Complete medical clearance (recommended)
  • Minimum age 16. If under the age of 18, participant must have parental consent to take this course.
  • Pass the following swimming test:
    • Perform a long, shallow front dive, then swim 500 yards, including 100 yards each of: sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach.
    • Tread water for at least two minutes with legs only
    • Surface dive headfirst and feet first in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet

Must be able to accomplish these tasks:

  • Remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness
  • Sit for extended periods, including in an elevated chair
  • Move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment
  • Observe all areas of the aquatic environment
  • Perform all needed rescues and survival skills
  • Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember
  • Will possess the skills to operate alone as a lifeguard, with or without other lifeguard support.

Water Fitness Class Description

Shallow Water Classes

J.O.Y.
Lots of fun and exercises that can be done at your level of fitness. This shallow water workout will provide full body muscle strength training, balance, coordination and cardiovascular exercise that will keep you loose and limber the rest of the day. Low-moderate impact/low-moderate intensity

Shallow Water
A great combination of arms, legs and core strength training, stretching and toning. Don’t forget to add in the cardio work and you are set for a good workout that should wear you out! If you are looking for a little more out of your workout, this will be a good class for you. Moderate-high impact/ moderate-high intensity

20/20/20
A water fitness class that will keep you moving from shallow, to deep, to shallow water. 20 minutes shallow cardio, 20 minutes deep water jogging, and then back to shallow water for 20 minutes upper body work! Guaranteed to keep the blood pumping! High impact/high intensity

Cardio Blast
This workout is a great way to gain muscle strength, burn calories and increase your cardiovascular fitness. It is ideal for those wanting a vigorous high intensity workout. High impact/high intensity

Recovery I **Limited to 10 members**
A low intensity shallow water workout using gentle stretches and moderate movements. This class will allow each participant to strengthen muscles, increase endurance and improve balance and joint flexibility. Beginners will start in Recovery I and work towards graduating to Recovery II. Low impact/low intensity

Recovery II
Graduates from Recovery I will continue to strengthen muscles and work more on endurance with 15min. longer on class time. Low impact/low intensity

Deep Water Classes

Deep Combo
A fun, deep-water class that will get your heart pumping and your muscles strengthened. The class takes place in deep water and uses flotation belts, barbells and noodles to enhance your workout. We begin with a short warm up, then transition into a cardiovascular workout. This is followed by strength and flexibility for you core muscles, arms, legs shoulders and back. We finish up with a stretching warm down. Moderate-high intensity

Deep Water Interval
Ready for a challenging work-out? This deep water class is designed to burn calories and improves your cardiovascular endurance. After warming up, you will be led in fun (big muscles) aerobic exercise for 3 or more minutes, interspersed with toning and strength work for isolated muscle groups using barbells or noodles. The overall effect is an adjustable high intensity workout certain to give you great results! Moderate-high intensity

 


OnDemand Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Looking for personal instruction and/or a flexible swim lesson schedule? OnDemand semi-private lessons will help! Swimmers learn the basics of swimming in a small group of four or more participants of similar age and ability. Each class is 45 minutes and sessions are 7 lessons.

Cost: Members: $40/Potential member $80

 


Private Lessons

Ages: Adults and children

Adults and children can register for individual lessons. Each lesson is 30 minutes. We have several instructors and time slots available. Contact Pattianne Murphy at 661-1093 to schedule.

Cost: $20 for 1 lesson, $55 for 3 lessons for members/$40 for 1 lesson, $115 for 3 lessons for potential members

TYDE is a USA Swimming and YMCA swim team offering a full range of competitive programming for all ages. Originally started in 1973 as WSY, we have grown to become one of the largest and most respected swim teams in North Carolina and across the country.
