Help Us Help Kids
Help kids succeed this school year!
Donate a new, unused backpack this month and you can join the Y for $1 joining fee. Current members can refer a friend and get $25 off your next month’s dues. Special ends August 15.
We’re also accepting school supplies to ensure every student starts the school year ready to learn! Please share with your friends!
Make Back to School Bright! Volunteer for YMCA Bright Beginnings!
Each year in the days leading up to the first day of school, YMCA volunteers take children who would otherwise not be prepared back to school shopping. 84 underprivileged children from several area elementary schools will go back-school-shopping through the Davie Family YMCA Bright Beginnings Program with the help of the Mocksville Rotary, Pearls of Empowerment, The Mebane Foundation, Davie County Schools, and volunteers like you. The children are also provided with a new, donated backpack stuffed with essential school supplies.
Many of us remember picking out a brand new backpack, outfit and purchasing supplies to get ready for the first day of school each year. Parents struggling to make ends meet cannot provide that experience, but we can still help children start the school year ready for success and make back to school special. Each year, the Y works with the staff at local Elementary Schools to identify the students who are most in need.
This year’s Bright Beginnings is taking place Saturday, August 16.
Community members can get involved in YMCA Bright Beginnings by donating and volunteering. Call 336 751 9622 and ask for Heidi Bronniman for more info about how you can help!

We provide training, materials, and on-going support. We will match you with a learner whose schedule fits yours – and you can meet at one of our tutoring rooms (Robinhood Road Family YMCA, Fulton Family YMCA, Winston Lake Family YMCA, William G. White. Jr Family YMCA) or at a public library. Volunteers meet 3 hours each week with a learner. No Spanish necessary! We have learners from over 20 countries, including China, Korea, Burma, Vietnam, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Ecuador…some are just beginners and some have studied English for years and just need help with conversation and pronunciation.

Davie County Reads Literacy Initiative
Davie County Reads Literacy Initiative is a program for adults who would like to become fluent speakers of English (English as a Second Language) or for those who wish to enhance their reading skills (Adult Literacy). This is a free program supported by the YMCA, United Way and Davie Community Foundation.
Classes take place at one of our three main locations: The Davie Family YMCA, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, or the Davie Public Library. Adult literacy classes are one-to-one at day/time to be arranged between student and program coordinator upon tutor availability. Adult ESL classes are set up by ability groups of about 4 -8 participants for one hour a week. Day and time of ESL classes are set up according to availability of tutors and students. Enrolled participants also have access to a language computer lab available to them at the YMCA seven days a week for extra independent practice.
