YMCA Gives Back Thanksgiving Day

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the YMCA has planned several special events to give back to the community.

The William G. White, Jr. Family YMCA will host women and children from a group that provides help and hope to victims of domestic violence. Women and children staying at the shelter over the holidays will experience a unique Thanksgiving sure to make lifelong memories. A YMCA bus will pick up the families at 11am and bring them to the Y for Thanksgiving lunch to be served at 11:30am. But they day is not over at the end of the meal!

We’ve planned a day filled with fun in the swimming pool, playing basketball or volleyball in the gym, exercising, and climbing the rock wall in the Youth Wellness Room…and much more. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for these kids and moms to have the Y to themselves (the facility is closed to members for the day)!

The Winston Lake Family YMCA will open its doors for the Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast for the homeless. The Y provides bus transportation beginning at 7 a.m. to the Soup Kitchen, Bethesda Home and other areas around Winston-Salem. Typically more than 200 people attend the breakfast and are served by volunteers from 7 am – 9 am. They are also provided with donated coats, hats and scarves as long as supplies last. The group always shares that they are so appreciative for the outpouring of support and holiday spirit from the volunteers and the Y.

The Wilkes Family YMCA is helping to start a healthy family tradition this holiday season with the 2nd Annual Wilkes Family YMCA Turkey Trot 5K. The event is held on Thanksgiving Morning, November 24, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. Walkers, joggers, runners, strollers, beginners, and serious athletes are all welcome. On-site registration will be from 7:00-7:45am on race morning. You can find more information here.

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration with your friends and family! We’re so grateful that you are part of the Y.
