Congrats, Cody! Local Student Awarded Scholarship for YMCA Youth in Government Program

We are excited to congratulate Cody Carmack, 15, a member of the Davie Family YMCA and Sophomore at Davie High School, who was recently awarded an Our Military Kids scholarship to participate in the YMCA Youth & Government program!

The son of Keith and Shannon Carmack, Cody’s father, Keith, is a captain in the army reserve and was deployed to Afghanistan in August 2011. Our Military Kids, Inc. recognizes military kids for proudly serving our country and appreciates the sacrifices made by military families. The organization provides grant opportunities for youth who have a parent serving in the National Guard of Army Reserve.

Cody is interested in pursuing a career in law and is excited to be a part of the YMCA Youth & Government program to learn more about the government process. The Youth & Government program is a “hands-on” experience in State Government for High School-age students. Youth & Government educates participants about the governmental process and develops skills in the areas of personal development, self-esteem and leadership. There are opportunities for news reporting, writing, debating and lobbying for or against bills. The highlight of the program is a weekend long trip to Raleigh, where the students present and debate Bills in the State Legislative Building. Cody will be a part of the judicial program where he will write briefs and make oral arguments for court cases before an appellate court made up of his peers. You can find out more about YMCA Youth & Government here.
