YMCA of NW NC Partners With Local Groups To Provide Backpacks To Students In Need

The Y to Offer $49 Off Joining Fee to New Members Who Make Backpack Donation

Back to school is around the corner and the Y is working to help local students start the school year off right. New members will receive $49 off the joining fee now through August 18 when they bring a new backpack to donate.

Local Ys are working with community partners, such as local schools and other nonprofits, to directly impact the students in their community who need school supplies. Flow GM Auto Center will fill 500 of the backpacks with a variety of school supplies.

Joining fees vary by branch, age and whether the membership includes other family members. Membership at the Y provides access to a wide range of activities that support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, as well as the opportunity to strengthen our community. The Y never turns anyone away because of the inability to pay.

“In the rush of back to school it is easy to forget that some families are struggling to make ends meet so purchasing new school supplies isn’t an option,” said Mark Bachman, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. “We hope this joining special will encourage people who are interested in the Y to also give back and help make back to school special for the kids in our community.”

The Y is committed to youth development, offering a wide range of youth sports this fall including soccer, basketball, volleyball and more. As the largest collective provider of childcare in the country, the Y also provides afterschool programs that provide academic support, as well as extracurricular activities, in a creative, safe and fun environment. Registration for both youth sports and afterschool programs is open at all branches now and continues through the end of the July.
